SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE
The Assistant Director of Finance & Accounting is a leadership role responsible for the integrity, maintenance, and ongoing management of the organization’s budget and forecast models, ensuring the senior leadership team has accurate financial information to guide funding decisions. Success in this role requires advanced Excel proficiency, strong analytical judgment, and the ability to translate financial data into clear insights for non-finance stakeholders.

This role directly supervises finance and accounting staff, providing leadership, oversight, and professional development to ensure high-quality, timely, and compliant financial operations.

The Assistant Director leads budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting efforts while managing core accounting functions including general ledger integrity, month-end close, and audit readiness. This position serves as a key partner to the Vice President of Finance and collaborates across departments to ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funding requirements, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the organization’s consolidated budget and forecasting models.
  • Participate in the annual budgeting process in partnership with senior leadership.
  • Update and manage monthly financial forecasts.
  • Use advanced Excel skills to continuously enhance and update budget and forecast models, ensuring timely, accurate, and efficient financial reporting.
  • Develop and present financial performance metrics to leadership, including but not limited to budget-to-actuals, dashboards, KPIs, and variance analyses that support strategic and operational decision-making.

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee key operational accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll review, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Oversee general ledger integrity, ensuring accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions and reviewing transactions for coding, allowability, and completeness.
  • Ensure accurate preparation of monthly financial statements, grant reports, and internal management reports.
  • Ownership of complex journal entries, allocations, and accounting import files.
  • Maintain accounting and grant procedures manuals where assigned.
  • Recommend process improvements to financial workflows, documentation practices, and internal controls.

Grants Management & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), state regulations, and contract requirements.
  • Understand, review, and analyze grant backup documentation, cost allocations, and supporting schedules for accuracy and compliance on budget usage, allowable costs, forecasting, and financial reporting requirements
  • Track funder requirements, program income, restricted funding, etc.
  • Provide guidance on complex compliance matters and serve as an internal resource for grant-related financial questions.

Audit & Monitoring Support

  • Assist in preparing the financial schedules, supporting documentation, and inquiry responses for annual single audits, financial audits, federal/state monitoring, and site visits.
  • Lead the financial components of subrecipient monitoring processes, including contributions to risk assessments and confirming compliance with federal and state award terms.

Supervisor & Team Development

  • Supervise finance and accounting staff, including assigning work, reviewing outputs, and supporting professional development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the department.
  • Provide training and performance feedback.
  • Complete performance evaluations using objective, measurable criteria.

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Advanced Excel skills are mandatory and will be assessed during the interview process (pivot tables, complex formulas, lookups, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis within a complex organization.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to manage, mentor, and develop staff.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance program staff.

PREFERRED SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Nonprofit finance experience.
  • Knowledge of fund accounting and federal grant requirements.
  • Experience with 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Guidance).
  • Experience supporting subrecipient monitoring or subrecipient management.
  • Experience with MIP Fund Accounting or other nonprofit accounting systems.
  • Experience with creating financial dashboards or data visualizations tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in financial planning and analysis or related finance function.
  • Minimum 4 years of supervisory experience.
  • At least 6 years of overall professional accounting/finance experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed sitting at a computer desk. Workdays and hours are subject to need and availability to ensure operational coverage throughout the work week. However, daily demands may require occasional early arrivals, late departures, extended hours, as well as weekend or holiday work.

TRAVEL REQUIRED
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
